Soccer History - The invention of soccer

Who invented Soccer? That question may not be an easy one to answer since so many cultures in our history liked kicking things, preferably things that could roll, around. By popular belief, it may be that it was the English who invented soccer.

There exist records going back to around the 1100's or so that resemble a violent game of soccer. They played the rudimentary game of soccer without many rules and the game of medieval soccer may have been more of a brawl than actual match. By the 1800's, a few rules did come into play and the game of soccer was taking shape, but still much was not yet decided. They experimented with soccer balls and different materials were used to create a "rounder ball".

The first recorded match took place in the 1100s and had very few rules making it a very violent game. As far as the 1800's rules were still not fully implemented and things like goals and use of hands may still have not been defined. In 1863, there was a breakthrough in the sport and its rules, on 26th October 1863, the football association (FA) was created. England has records of games similar to soccer being played, but records of games from many years back may not be the easiest to find. It's hard to even speculate on how the game came about or who invented the game of soccer. Kicking a round object that rolls is natural to us and I would bet many kids before recorded times kicked coconuts around fro sport.

I read this in some soccer history...

Over 3000 years ago, for example, the Chinese played a game called Tsu Chu in which a stuffed ball of animal skin was kicked- rather similar! At a similar time in history, Kemari was played in Japan- the aim was to kick a ball through two bamboo shoots. The Greeks also had a similar game called Episkyros and the Romans brought Harpascum to Britain and this may have developed into football over time. So who invented soccer? who knows.

Many civilizations have played similar games. From my reading, it may seem that the English may be on top for being credited with the games invention because they documented the game that we know as modern soccer the best.
